MY boyfriend is type 2 diabetic, he is eats well but lately is very depressed?
He is 48, in good health basically, except for his depression, he has 2 doctors all they do is give him more drugs, I tell him he needs to exercise, we need to turn a negative into a postive. We don't fight, yell, scream, we do love each other, it seems as if I'm the only 1 he wants to be around. He can't even leave the house sometimes it takes him a couple of days. I wait, give much understanding, I don't push him into an arguement. What I will do like tonight he wasn't even answering the phone to even talk to his daughter. I politely asked him what was wrong he said he didn't know wanted to go to bed. So we went to bed I wait untll he is asleep, cause he does have sleep apnea, needs a cpap machine. If this has to do with being a diabetic, depression, he also seems to be on the verge of breakdown. I love him, very much in love with him, but I know I can't cure him, nor make him better. All I seem to do is just listen to him, it comes and goes.
Hi! What a good woman you are to be there for your b/f. I am t-1 for 48 years and I have had my share of depression. We do need all the support and need to vent about how we feel etc. Has he ever discussed with you what makes him feel depressed? That may help too. Does he watch his blood sugars? Lots of times some of us having too high of sugars will make us depressed but it also cause mood swings, being irritable. I also have days that I just want to be alone yet have someone around me just in case.
Diabetes nowadays is so different than when I was diagnosed. Being t-1 is not as bad as it used to be with all it's rules. Sure there are injections of which I take between 4-5 a day and all the finger sticks but hey, I am still here after all these years. No matter what age, race, male or female stress and depression are a big factor. I am under an awful lot of stress and it does affect my sugars and not in a good way. I do my darndest to control them but there are days that I just wish I wasn't diabetic.
Exercise is very important whether we are t-1 or t-2. It's healthy and it helps with stress, depression, sugars.
Your listening to him is a big deal. See, it is very hard for another person not being a diabetic to actually know how we feel and what we go through on a daily basis of what we feel. You see how he is and are trying to help which is super. You could go to the ADA Association on the internet and read up on us. There is always something to learn even for myself. I hope things turn around for him.
What about him joining a diabetic support group (WebMD is good) even if it's just to read other posts? He would be able to post himself after he joins. I belong to a couple boards and it's great and you also make friends and ones that are going through what other diabetics go through, even yourself; you can post too as a concerned g/f.
I really hope I have helped in someway. It is important that he at least tries to get out of that depression. Good luck and I mean that. Take care, both of you.
