For a diabetic patient with bad vision and hearing you: a) order insulin and syringes;?

b) teach her to use magnifier; c) have large size educational materials; d) all of the above

I would suggest AGAINST using a magnifier on syringes. Because of the distortion, it's very difficult to get an accurate dose.

Basically, blind and low vision diabetics have two options.

A: use syringes with a blind-friendly count-a-dose, which is difficult to find but very helpful with you can. These, unfortunately, only work with 100 unit syringes,.

B: use an insulin pen, as these are usually completely blind-friendly.

Again, I do not suggest using a magnifier on insulin syringes. The distortion + the limitations of your vision, causing you to inject even 1 extra unit of novolog, can drop healthy glucose into dangerous ranges.. and that's a real risk you take!

Re the ordering syringes and insulin.. unless for another reason they have difficulty traveling (ie, they're very elderly) do NOT do it for them. It's saying 'you aren't even independent enough to manage getting to a pharmacy or ordering on line'- which every deafblind person without major cognitive impairment SHOULD BE capable of doing.
