How Can I Help My Dog's Paw?

I have a 10 y/o blind and diabetic labrador. About 2 weeks ago, I took him to an emergency vet to have his nail removed (it was hanging off). He was given local anest., the area was cauterized, and they kept him for 4 hours (wanted to keep him for 8, though ready in an hour). Anyway, this same foot started bleeding after I finished the Amoxicillin (10 days), and began swelling. I brought him to my usual vet on 12/24, and they gave him Benadry @ the office, more antibiotics, and an antiseptic to wash it with, but now the pads of his paw are coming off, the swelling hasn't gone down, and I just don't know what to do. I feel awful looking at him like this. He's really just not himself anymore, and I'm afraid that this infection is really doing a number on him. I'm afraid that it's going to come down to him having to lose the foot, or the leg. What should I do? Should I just continue to sit back and hope that the new antibiotics do their job?

Diabetes makes healing wounds difficult. I think that's the problem.

He can lose the paw. It won't get any better unless you get the correct care.

You need a specialist. Pronto!!!

Don't wait and see for this new round of antibiotics. Yes, it's infected, but it's more than that. His system isn't working properly and can't heal. It's like putting a band aid on a gunshot wound.

Don't be so quick to jump onto the euthanasia train. There are new treatments, you just have to find a vet who knows about them.
It will be expensive though. This is a chronic issue and will be ongoing.
